Honestly, I probably didn’t care about catering to my hair’s low porosity until last year and that was a no-go. I was always concerned about finding products for my 4B/4C texture but come to find out, it’s not even the true determining factor of what products will work for you. Hair porosity means how well your hair absorbs things. If you have high porosity it means your hair absorbs products easily and may be porous so it can lose moisture easily too. Normal porosity it means your hair absorbs and retains moisture for longer. If you are a low porosity shawty like me, it means your hair repeals moisture. Click here to see what your hair porosity is. Luckily though , I’ve found some products my hair loves and I think yours will too, here’s my low porosity hair routine.
Included in my low porosity hair routine is:
- Pre-Poo
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Deep Conditioner
- Leave-In Conditioner
- Moisturizer
- (Sometimes) Oil
- Hair Gel
Low Porosity Hair RoutineĀ
Pre-Poo
I like to pre-poo (when I have the time). I pre-poo with a honey and olive oil mixture. The honey is a humectant which means it draws in moisture, and olive oil is an oil that my hair seems to like. Prepping your hair with oil provides a great moisture boost. After the concoction is on my head, I like to put a heated gel cap on to get things a lil steamy š
Shampoo
It’s always important to include a clarifying shampoo in a low-porosity hair routine because our hair tends to have product build up. One shampoo I love is Emerge It’s Knot Happening. It’s a moisturizing and hydrating shampoo made with almond milk and shea. So it doesn’t leave your hair hella dry and actually detangles it quite nicely. The scent isn’t overpowering and a little goes a long way! Oh and did I mention it’s SEVEN DOLLARS?!?!! $7. Hello, that’s what I’m talking about. Ā Some other shampoos I enjoy are Briogeo Be Gentle Be Kind Banana + Coconut Superfood Shampoo and Camille Rose Sweet Ginger Cleansing Rinse.
Conditioner
We already know how important conditioning our hair is to properly detangle while also nourishing our low-porosity curls. The conditioner I am currently using is Emerge High Key Smooth and I was so surprised that it was as bomb as it is. Detangling my hair is literally the easiest process and my hair feels nice and soft afterwards. It’s also made with almond milk and shea to hydrate your curls.
Deep Conditioner aka The Most Important Step for Low Porosity Hair
Now listen, if it’s one thing you’ve got to do during your low porosity routine, it’s deep condition. This is going to give your hair the love it DESERVES. This maybe my favorite part because I can slap it on and go off to eat or do something I been procrastinating on lol. I’m going to have a separate post listing all my favorite deep conditioners, but the one I have been loving for the last 5 months is the TGIN Honey Miracle Hair Mask. It is so creamy and hydrating. It has 2 things my hair loves, honey and olive oil. I keep it on for about 30 minutes to 2 hours (listen no judgement thank you!!) and my hair is literally *chef kiss*. Curls poppin, hair soft, all hydrated, it’s really everything. But if you’re one of those people who’s like, “I don’t have time for deep conditioning,” let me introduce you to Aussie 3 Minute Moisture. It does what needs to be done every-time. It smells amazing and really provides that necessary moisture to your hair. This would also be a great moment to use that heated gel cap to help with strands accepting the moisture!
Leave-In Conditioner
Now listen, this leave-in literally is a Godsend do you hear me! Camille Rose Honey Hydrate (yes I’m obsessed with her lol!) is everything in a bottle. It’s that honey that draws in that moisture to your hair and nourishes it. It’s not as sticky as it looks and a little bit goes a long way! My number one tip to include in your low porosity routine is to make sure you put your leave-in on while still in the shower! That steam is doing wonders and your hair has just been freshly hydrated making it the perfect grounds for conditioning.
Moisturize
Once I step out the shower, I like to follow up with Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter. This moisturizer does not weigh down my hair or leave it feeling icky once dried down. It is on the thicker side (like me period) so don’t get too heavy handed! It leaves your curls really soft and moisturized and helps with definition too. Finding a moisturizer that doesn’t just sit on top of your strands is very important in a low-porosity routine.
Oil
So as a low-porosity shawty, we know that the LCO method is for us. I sometimes would use an oil or oil based product like Blue Magic Indian Hemp. You want to use something that is light like jojoba oil that will also keep your hair from being weighed down. I don’t always feel it necessary use an oil though personally but it doesn’t hurt to do so every now and then!
Gel
The sweet final step of my hair routine. I have been loving the Mielle Honey and Ginger Styling Gel. It smells so bomb first of all and it defines my curls with zero crunch which is all I could ever ask for. I use about 2 pumps and run it through my hair and let it dry overnight.
And the next day my hair feels amazing and my curls are just bomb! I’m deff looking forward to trying out new products but these will always be my staples. What’s your current routine and have you tried any of the products mentioned?
